week Seven Assignment three

 Week Seven Assignment 3

1. Explain the three levels of words and how you can use word levels to decide which words to teach.

familiar words- The words that teachers do  not have to teach .Ex bed, look, run

unfamiliar words- Words that student do not know the meaning of the words  that come up in conversation or on TV ex; RE reassuring. These are the words we focus on.

Highly technical words -words that come from chemistry or biology. These words we leave up to the Science teacher to teach

2. How do you teach your students to "chunk" words as a strategy for decoding unfamiliar words? When do you provide this instruction?

Take a long word and cut of the front of the word cut off the back and have them read the middle, If they can't read the middle cut the middle in half. After a few day tell the students that this is too expensive so they can  cover the front and back of words with their thumbs. After a few days the students will read without covering the word. This instruction is provided when students are sounding out each individual letter .By chunking words students will become  fluent readers

3. Based on Professor Allington's comments and the classroom examples, what are some ways you might foster word study in your classroom?

I would want to adopt into my classrooms learning a new day a word chart. That the students get to pick a word and we  discuss it and learn about it . I also like that he says that its not a one size fits all teaching we have to  adopt are teaching to all different type of learners.
